Asset Visibility Delivers Better Equipment Utilization and Cost Avoidance

The Challenge

When Mitch Adler, Assistant Vice President Business Operations, NYC Health + Hospitals and long-time Crothall Healthcare Technology Solutions (HTS) partner, had an urgent need for additional infusion pumps at one of his other facilities, he turned to his HTS team at Lincoln Medical Center. Crothall’s Director of Biomedical Engineering, Brian Bleaman, was there to help.

Brian had just played a key role in the implementation of new infusion pumps at Lincoln and had a comprehensive understanding of its inventory of pumps, old and new.  He was able to immediately provide pumps to fill the other hospital’s needs.  Brian worked with the Materials Management team at NYC Health and Hospitals’ central office to expedite delivery of the pumps to where they were needed.  The quick response of Brian and his team helped avoid any delay in providing the pumps as well as the expense that would have been incurred.

The Plan

Brian and team were able to locate the required pumps from NYC Health + Hospitals’ current inventory of pumps to fill Mitch’s immediate need. By redistributing underutilized pumps to where they were needed most, the team avoided sourcing and investing in new pumps, only to dispose of them within the year when the hospital goes live on its new pumps.

As they say, it takes a village. Brian is the first to say he couldn’t have done it alone. He delivered a coordinated, comprehensive, cost-effective solution to our client’s challenge by leveraging NYC Health + Hospitals’ current pump inventory and resources, ranging from the Sterile Processing technicians and Distribution team to the shipping and receiving department and onsite biomedical technicians. To ensure each device was patient-ready before delivery, the Crothall team tested every piece of equipment.

The Outcome

Effective leadership helps health systems better leverage inventory. By reallocating underutilized devices, the health system avoided unnecessary capital purchases of new equipment and prevented increased operating expenses from managing additional medical devices.

“I look forward to working with Brian in the future and consider him a valuable partner in helping to carry out our organization’s mission.”

-Mitchell A. Adler, MD, JD, MPH, FACP, Assistant Vice President Business Operations
