Adrian Duran – How A Floor Care Technician Contributes to the Patient Experience

The colorful terrazzo floor in the atrium of Children’s Hospital of Colorado at the Anshutz campus immediately captures the hearts of children and parents. This 1,000 square foot work of art sparkles like a thin layer of glass. At night, the floor is almost iridescent.

For the 14 years Environmental Services Lead Adrian Duran spent as a Floor Technician, the floor is his canvas. From 5 p.m. through 1 a.m., he cleaned and polished it every night. During the week, he methodically deep cleaned and waxed every inch.

“As an EVS Lead, Adrian believes the smallest of details are important, whether it’s the corners and edges of any floor or making sure that his co-workers are valued and cared for,” says Angela Velez-Reyes, EVS System Patient Experience Manager. “He is soft spoken, attentive, and always shows compassion and concern for his patients, their families, frontline associates, clinical staff, and everyone he encounters.”

A 15-year Crothall associate, Adrian was promoted to lead technician last year. He understands that a visitor’s impression of the facility begins with clean public areas and restrooms, as well as the floors. He knows the perception of a clean environment builds trust and a feeling of safety.

As a young boy in Mexico City, Adrian listened to stories told by his relatives of their lives here. Seeking a more fulfilling life, he immigrated here 24 years ago to join his father. His career at Crothall is part of his dream of living in the United States, and we are fortunate to have him.
