How Does a Housekeeper Make A Difference – Sonia Benitez’s Story

Former EVS Director Nicholas Sheets says Sonia Benitez simply embodies the best of EVS. As proof, here is a story he says he will never forget:

“As a new director at the California Rehabilitation Institute in 2023, it took time to get acclimated to the culture and the hospital’s high standards. One day, Sonia knocked on my door and asked to speak with me. I was concerned that she may be unhappy or present a potential problem. Instead, she asked how my transition was going. She talked about her arrival at CRI, how it had so much potential, and asked me to please open my heart to the opportunities in front of me to make a difference in patient’s lives.She was willing to help me every step of the way and said she had all the faith in the world that good things were to come. This conversation lasted just over 20 minutes. Later, I realized that the time she spent in my office was nearly her entire lunch break. That’s how she chose to spend it because that’s who she is.”

Nicholas adds that in four and one-half years, Sonia has established a reputation as a selfless worker. She has a perfect attendance record and always offers to train new employees.During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was always willing to work overtime. And her joy for life carries over to patients. She will often dance for patients to cheer them up and her constant smile makes her EVS’ number on ambassador.
