Nationwide Children’s Hospital Receives SWACO Green Honors

Nationwide Children’s Hospital has been presented the Board of Trustees Honor from SWACO, the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio.  AS patient volumes have rapidly increased over the last few years, the hospital has had to expand to meet demand. With SWACO waste audits, employee involvement, and advanced planning, Nationwide Children’s was able to slow the increase in waste to just 2.5%, compared to estimates of a 14% increase. 

The hospital has also put into place an impressive recycling program, led by Crothall Environmental Services Director Tim Schooley. Recycling containers have been built into every new patient room.  36% of the hospital’s waste is now recycled.  Nationwide Children’s is now moving toward organics recycling and SWACO believes this example can be replicated at other hospitals.
