Make A DifferencePeggy works on the Bone Marrow Transplant floor, where sick kids usually stay for several months. It is frequently visited by professional athletes. One particularly magnetic little boy became very popular with everyone on the unit, and he always got attention from the visitors and had pictures of them hanging in his room. One week after he and his mom went home, they came back to visit, bringing a silver picture frame. Rather than a photo of one of the celebrities who had visited, the little boy was pictured with his Housekeeper, Peggy; they had the frame engraved, expressing thanks and love for Peggy. Ann Spence, the nurse manager on the unit, comments: “Peggy is more than an excellent housekeeper. She cares deeply about every child and family, and she is respectful of their needs. She has been seen dancing to the beat of a drum being played by a patient, singing along with a TV show, and zoom-zoom-zooming race cars in a patient’s bed! Peggy truly goes beyond her daily work to make sure each child feels special and to bring them all a little humor and joy.” |
