Make A Difference Winner

An Uncommon Blood Bank Donation

It isn't out of the ordinary for John to go above and beyond his normal responsibilities. As a matter of fact, his willingness to go the extra mile to help his clients and coworkers is legendary at St. Peter's University Hospital. However, this one action makes John's "normal" seem very extraordinary, indeed.

John was assigned to the Blood Bank and went to fix one of the centrifuges that wasn't operating properly. He fixed the centrifuge, but then noticed that there was a cell washer waiting to be installed. John approached the supervisor, JoAnne, and asked if she would like him to take care of it. She thanked him, and declined, stating that the vendor would be coming "one of these days" to set it up for her. Then she thought,"Why not?"

John reviewed the manual that came with the equipment carefully and then set to work. Within an hour, the cell washer was installed, had the quality assurance check completed, and was ready for use. JoAnne was thrilled!

This wasn't something that John had to do, but his willingness to go the extra mile to help get a critical piece of equipment up and running has certainly made a difference in the lives of many people. We could all learn a thing or two from John and his approach to getting the job done.
